Central Zone League Matches
The Central Zone League Matches in the Ranji Trophy is important for the teams as it helps them to become one of the toppers of the tournament. The teams like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh compete in this match to get the top position so that they can secure a place in the knock out level of the tournament.
The first match of the Central Zone League was played between the teams of Vidarbha and Railways at Nagpur from 03-05 December, 1977. The match remained drawn during the stipulated time and both the teams earned 5 and 3 points from it.
The board expects squads to be picked on the previous domestic season rather than on reputation. But that’s not always easy, especially when the zonal panel answers to associations whose own players missed out.
Captaincy tells you where a zone thinks it stands, and for 2026-27 the six sides were led by Kanhaiya Wadhawan for North, Ruturaj Gaikwad for West, Tilak Varma for South, Rajat Patidar for Central, Ishan Kishan for East and Jonathan Rongsen for North East. Four of the six had already played international cricket.
First Match
One of the first things Pandit did was to co-opt himself into selection committee meetings from senior to all age-groups and watched matches of U-19, U-25 and even below-average MP teams. This was to try and understand what the team needed and not succumb to internal association requests of including players of sub-par quality. He did it even at the cost of hurting selectors egos but for the greater good of the state.
It paid off as he was able to choose a team that didn’t miss out on frontline bowlers Avesh Khan (national duty), Ishwar Pandey, Puneet Datey and Kuldeep Sen due to injury or unavailability. This allowed him to choose the bench strength that he did. It was instrumental in winning the Ranji Trophy.
Third Match of Central Zone
Central Zone have all but sealed their place in the 2025/26 Duleep Trophy final after taking a first-innings lead against West Zone in their semifinal clash at the BCCI CoE Ground 2. Fifties from Shubham Sharma, Upendra Yadav, Harsh Dubey and captain Rajat Patidar helped them reach a daunting 600 in 164.3 overs. West’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tanush Kotian put on a 62-run stand but were both eventually castled by Saransh Jain, who took 5-84.
In the other semi-final, East Zone secured a four-wicket victory over North Zone to set up a title clash with South. Ishan Kishan (40 n.o.) and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s unbeaten doubles saw them home inside three days. The final will be held at the Wankhede Stadium on December 5.
