1. Vijay Hazare Trophy
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is a domestic 50-over cricket tournament, played in a league and playoff format. It is administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and is contested by state and city teams. It is the top level of List A cricket in the country and is an important feeder tournament for selection to the Indian national team. It was started in 2022 and replaced the Ranji Trophy. The current version of the tournament consists of 38 teams, divided into four elite groups and one plate group. Each team plays the other teams in their group once. The top two teams from each group, along with the best performing runner-up, qualify for the quarter finals.
The tournament has a high profile and is considered the most challenging competition in domestic cricket. The matches feature high-quality players and a fast pace of play. It is a great platform for new players to showcase their skills. In addition to the prestigious nature of the competition, it also offers lucrative match fees for the players. This has made the competition very popular among the Indian cricketers. The winner of the tournament is awarded the Vijay Hazare Trophy, named after former Indian president, and cricketer Vijay Hazare.
2. Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket tournament organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It consists of matches between state teams and is one of the most prestigious competitions in Indian cricket.
The tournament was founded in 1934-35, and is named after Ranjitsinhji, a prominent Indian cricketer who played for England and Sussex before playing for India. It has gained a significant following and has been likened to county cricket in England.
The league stage of the tournament is divided into three groups, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages. The winners of the knockout stages will play the finals, which are five-day matches. The finals are contested by the top two teams from each of the groups, and are usually held in December or January.
Teams from the same zone cannot play each other twice in the same season, and a team may not win more than three matches in a row in the knockout stages. In addition, teams that play against each other in the quarter-finals will not have a bye in the semifinals. This system is designed to ensure that each team plays at least eight matches in the tournament.
Each member association shall immediately on the conclusion of each Ranji Trophy match at league level, inform the Honorary Secretary and the Board’s Office in Bombay, by telegram/telex/fax/telephone/letter, of the result of the match and the position of each of the members in the table of points in the respective zones.
The Honorary Secretary may permit the change of dates of matches for unavoidable reasons, such as civil unrest, inclement weather, and clash with important festivals.
The winner of the league stage of the competition will be crowned champions and will receive the Ranji Trophy. The runners-up will earn a place in the semi-finals, and the winners of those matches will face each other in a five-day knockout final. In addition, the top four teams will also be eligible to compete in the Irani Cup, a single-match tournament in which last year’s Ranji Trophy winner plays against a Rest of India team.
3. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
Arunachal Pradesh has competed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy since its inception. This tournament is an annual knockout cricket competition for the top teams of the North Eastern states of India.
The tournament is contested between the four north-eastern states of India, and the winner qualifies for the Ranji Trophy. The first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was held in 1936, and was won by the Delhi team. The current champions of the tournament are Tawang Titans.
4. Indian Premier League
The Indian Premier League is the world’s most prestigious Twenty20 cricket tournament. The competition has featured some of the most memorable moments in modern Indian cricket history, and has seen some of the game’s biggest stars, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, and AB de Villiers.
It was suspended in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned for the 2022 season with two new franchises – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans – joining the league.
The format of the IPL is based on a group stage, where teams compete against each other in a round-robin series. Each team plays against each other twice, once at home and once away. Points are awarded based on the number of wins, losses, and ties. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which culminate in a final between the two best teams.
