Toss
Weather appears to be turning in our direction and umpires are taking another look before making their decision soon.
Half an hour prior to play commencing, team captains meet and exchange selection sheets before tossing a coin to determine who will bat first.
Depending on who wins this round of coins, their captain may either bowl or field.
ICRC regulations stipulate that any match abandoned after the toss has been played is considered as having taken place and will enter statistical records, meaning if India wins this match without restarting, they would qualify for the finals by virtue of topping their group – provided Pakistan lose against Bangladesh as well! Covers have now been put back on and an inspection scheduled at 12.30 PM IST by umpires will begin shortly thereafter.
First Over
As soon as a team is ready, the first over begins. Batsmen typically gather in the center and pump their fists. Sometimes, however, they discuss things unrelated to cricket such as personal issues or sing songs during this stage of proceedings.
Ball 1 – Arshdeep to Shanaka, no run. On a full toss outside off, Shanaka attempts a scoop but misses. UltraEdge shows there was no bat and umpire Gazi Sohel rules it out; his decision stands despite an appeal by Shanaka’s team mates; this decision stood. Shanaka made an error-ridden call.
Second Over
After an early misfire by Nissanka and KJP, Sri Lanka eventually hit their stride again by adding 127 to Sri Lanka’s total before entering a Super Over.
Arshdeep was asked to bowl this final over; on his first ball with an outstanding yorker he caught KJP off guard – although review was taken but umpire Gazi Sohel upheld his decision.
He follows up with another low full toss outside off. Kamindu shuffles across to look for a scoop but instead gets an inside edge that flies past and rolls back behind his bat, missing all four edges before rolling back for runs at deep backward point.
Kamindu reviews again but the umpire upholds his original decision despite him becoming angry with himself; India wins by one wicket. 1-0 India.
Third Over
India need only to win one more ball to advance to the final and they are clearly amongst the favorites here.
Ball 2 – Arshdeep to Kamindu Mendis, 1 run. Arshdeep bowled a full toss outside off that was short but low; Kamindu attempted a scoop but got an inside-edge instead, rolling back towards Arshdeep who dived well to take an excellent catch.
Ball 3 – Arshdeep to Shanaka, no run. A good york length delivery across the line saw Shanaka attempt a batshot but slice past its outside edge; Jitesh Sharma at deep backward point collected it without review from standing umpire Gazi Sohel;
Sri Lanka are now 2/1 with handshakes all round for their win; Nissanka had played an exceptional innings; scoring his maiden T20I century!
Fourth Over
Nissanka and Kamindu put on an exceptional partnership of 127 runs for the fifth wicket and put Sri Lanka on course for an imposing total.
Unfortunately, Sri Lanka struggled in the final over and KJP’s outside-edge sent the match into extra innings.
Gazi Sohel upholds the first decision from the ump, ruling Shanaka out after reviewing. It was a full and wide york length delivery outside off that moved away from him completely and hit deep backward point where Jitesh Sharma took an easy catch to give India victory with one ball to spare – leaving no chance for Bangladesh in the final matchup.
Fifth Over
Arshdeep delivered an outstanding over to bring India closer to their target. He delivered a full wide yorker outside off, Shanaka tried playing it inside-edge but managed to slice it straight to deep backward point who took an easy catch.
Nissanka and KJP both played wonderful innings to put Sri Lanka in an outstanding position, but an unfortunate escape on the final ball meant they had to settle for a Super Over.
Handshakes ensued after this excellent contest between India and Sri Lanka; India remain unbeaten and are firm favorites for victory, providing time to rest injured players before waiting on the result of Pakistan-Bangladesh’s second semi final match-up.
Sixth Over
Nissanka created history by scoring his maiden T20I ton, adding 127 together with KJP until an outside-edge from him sent it into Super Over. India bowled tight overs and Arshdeep secured KJP’s wicket in this crucial encounter.
Ball 1 – Arshdeep unleashed a low full-toss that Kamindu misjudged and missed, rolling backwards before diving but missing. Umpire Gazi Sohel gave his ruling instantly despite Kamindu challenging.
Jitesh took an easy catch at deep backward point to seal India’s win and handshakes were exchanged before Jitesh took a simple catch at deep backward point for Jitesh to seal India’s passage into the final.
Sri Lanka may be disappointed but nonetheless it was an impressive game played between rival sides that all played out to its final overs. Now both teams huddle together as they await its conclusion before heading into their final overs!
Seventh Over
Indian players will no doubt be pleased with their performance and Jitesh and Rinku’s catch in the Super Over, marking India’s sixth win through this method of victory.
KJP falls at the start of the next over and then Nissanka’s determined knock comes to an end when he was caught at long-on off Arshdeep in an excellent over – giving away only two runs, the bowler was named man of the match for his efforts – before hugging all his partners including Gambhir before joining them all in celebrating India’s well-earned win en route to making their way into the final. They will surely be favorites to claim victory at that point!
Eighth Over
With victory secured, India can celebrate in style as they remain undefeated and look forward to their final clash against Pakistan.
Arshdeep delivers a stunning over, bowling a low full toss outside off, which Shanaka attempts to scoop, only for it to fly straight towards deep backward point where Jitesh takes an effortless catch with ease. Following their victory, India batsmen exchange handshakes as they celebrate yet another win;
India going top of pool A with 100% and Sri Lanka suffering their first loss during tournament play; both sides leave with smiles on their faces!
Nineth Over
India qualify for the final as the group leaders, winning by tie. Nissanka and KJP put up a solid partnership, but KJP was dismissed in his attempts at scoring quickly in an attempt to force Sri Lanka into a Super Over.
Arshdeep bowled a short over and Nissanka hit it for a boundary off of the first ball before going for more runs, only to be caught at deep backward point by Jitesh after trying for quick single, however UltraEdge showed it wasn’t clean edge.
He is outraged both at himself and at umpire; India need three points in three innings to win their match with fans going wild in appreciation of an incredible performance; shake hands have since followed as all players celebrate this effort together with pride among teammates after this outstanding showing by players as teams celebrate with handshakes all around and players celebrate in celebration for an outstanding effort from everyone involved!
