South Africa was in control during the final two days of Pakistan’s inaugural Test against South Africa at Rawalpindi. Babar Azam hit some exquisite strokes during his 142-ball innings to keep South Africa well ahead of target on an unusually slow pitch that favoured spinners.
became only the fifth South African ever to amass 7000 One Day International runs as his side won both games of their series 2-0, a milestone that stood out in the South Africa National Cricket Team Vs Pakistan National Cricket Team Match Scorecard.

ODIs
The South Africa national cricket team, commonly referred to as the Proteas, represents South Africa in men’s international cricket and is administered by Cricket South Africa; they are full members of the International Cricket Council and take their name as a tribute to South Africa’s national flower, Protea cynaroides.
ODIs (One Day Internationals) are limited-overs matches between two teams of eight players each, consisting of nine innings with 40 overs being available per side for play.
The winning team is determined by scoring the most runs within nine innings; these international matches are very popular worldwide and feature neutral umpires to ensure fair competition.
South Africa boasts an excellent record in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), having won 104 of 208. Their finest season was 2008/09 when they won all nine of their ODIs – including a series victory against India! This marks only the second time since Australia in 1994/95 that one country had managed this feat.
At first, South African cricket struggled. Losing all eleven of their Test matches, it took until 1904 for them to establish themselves as a serious international power.
But even then, West Indian and Australian opponents would remain far behind until South Africa’s dominance reached new heights by the late 1990s.
South Africa will hope to overcome their poor start at the 2027 ICC Trophy by performing well against Pakistan in three ODIs, starting with losing the opening match against them and viewing this series as an experiment before heading toward 2027 World Cup in England and Wales.
Marizanne Kapp will miss the remaining ODIs against Pakistan due to an injury sustained in Kimberley on Monday and will not play.
As a precautionary measure, Proteas medical team has decided to rest their star player. Kapp had an impressive showing during that match scoring nine runs while bowling three overs for South Africa.
T20Is
Visibility is key to any successful T20 league, and SA20 was no different. SuperSport, South Africa’s dominant sports broadcaster, not only served as rights holder but also provided commercial partnership.
Their coverage looked and felt global with studio analysis from experts panels as well as visually captivating visuals and social media posts to attract audiences and international sponsors.
Attracted some of the biggest names in world cricket – such as Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers; Laura Wolvaardt and Shabnim Ismail quickly garnering fan attention as newcomers.
SA20’s first two seasons proved highly successful; ticket sales increased and merchandise revenue skyrocketed, as it reignited fan passion while bringing world-class talent right to local stadiums.
The Proteas haven’t managed to win a T20 World Cup yet, yet remain one of the elite teams in this format. At both 2023 and 2024 competitions they reached the semi-finals before falling short against Australia each time.
They have produced many legendary T20 players such as AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Jonty Rhodes through their careers; currently Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma and Anrich Nortje all making their marks in T20 Cricket.
South Africa are facing an uphill struggle in their bid to reach the summit of T20 world rankings. Heinrich Klaasen’s injury has created an opening in their batting line-up while Dewald Brevis remains uncertain for this series against India, giving young batsmen Donovan Ferreira and Nandre Burger an opportunity to impress selectors as well as Ottniel Baartman who is right-arm seamer.
Due to a short international window this summer, many regular Proteas players may miss games as workloads are managed, the 50-over World Cup cycle comes to a close, and priorities of the game shift. They should approach this challenge with confidence by staying true to their core values.
Tests
South Africa’s national cricket team, commonly referred to as the Proteas, represents its country in Test matches. Administered by Cricket South Africa and full members of the International Cricket Council, they play a pivotal role in culture of South Africa while providing entertainment and connecting people globally – as well as being an economic driver that generates employment and economic development opportunities for its participants.
At first, South Africa struggled to compete with England. On their initial reciprocal tour in 1907, England fielded second-stringers like Colin Blythe, Schofield Haigh, and JN Crawford on tour – yet South Africa managed to beat England by winning five official matches thanks to Sherwell, Schwarz, Faulkner and Vogler, the masters of googlies at that time.
By the late 1990s, South Africa had established itself as one of the premier ODI teams. Their 1998 Champions Trophy triumph marked their first major tournament win under ICC auspices and laid the foundation for rapid advancement within limited-overs cricket.
South Africa was never able to compete with the world’s best Test teams; their struggle in World Cups such as 1996, 1999, and 2000 earned them a reputation as “chokers”, which continued even up until 2025.
Shukri Conrad has transformed the Proteas under his leadership into one of the strongest squads in cricket, creating an attack that can thrive regardless of conditions and produce results such as Aiden Markram’s fourth innings 136 and Kagiso Rabada’s nine wicket match haul to power their way into the 2025 World Test Championship final.
Bavuma and Markram demonstrated poised performances that have defined experts across sports for centuries; only those able to fully focus on their task at hand can achieve such remarkable performances.
T20I Series
T20 cricket may be maligned for its damage it does to the game, yet it remains one of the world’s most important formats right now.
T20 proved critical to rejuvenating South African cricket three years ago as stadiums filled up for international matches again and it gives Proteas their best chance at claiming another limited-overs title – this series being followed up with five match T20I series against India before leading up to 2024 World Cup held between February and March.
T20I format also gives young players an opportunity to crack national team teams, with Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock making names for themselves in T20 Internationals. Thanks to franchise T20 Global Leagues, these youngsters now have an avenue for advancement; and will hope to continue their successes against Pakistan.
Proteas’ T20I series against Pakistan will be difficult without Heinrich Klaasen in the batting line-up, which has struggled of late; but young players such as David Miller and Anrich Nortje have proven they can step up when necessary.
Proteas have proved their mettle across all formats of cricket but excel in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). They have won all four matches they’ve participated in so far against Pakistan at home while missing several key players such as Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Amir due to injuries.
On paper, these teams appear evenly-matched and it should make for an exciting contest. South Africa have an excellent track record against Pakistan in this format and hope to continue this trend; Pakistan, meanwhile, are hoping to take advantage of an inexperienced Proteas side and their bowlers have proven themselves against T20 opponents before. Their spinners in particular may pose problems for South Africa’s young side and reigning Champions Trophy champions could cause havoc against them!
