CSK vs KKR
As the IPL enters its final stages, attention turns towards play-offs. Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could qualify for semi-finals while Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) needing an unlikely comeback finish as fifth place finishers; five-time champions Rajasthan Royals ended KKR’s seven match winning streak during their last match win by defeat.
CSK have proven they can turn things around with one big innings, and almost reached that mark against RR. Unfortunately, an unexpected collapse led to their downfall; their visitors were reduced to 68/6 in 12 overs before Dhoni came in to save them with his record-breaking run chase; but, unfortunately, their target eluded them.
CSK failed to chase a target of 180 or higher for only the fifth time ever and first time since 2019. Only RCB have lost more such matches during this time.
By contrast, KKR’s spin-heavy attack dismantled CSK at Chepauk, with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy bowling an outstanding line-up which restricted CSK to their lowest score ever at Chepauk.
KKR have an outstanding record against CSK at home and this could prove instrumental in reaching the play-offs. Their record against Chennai stands at 5-3 with them winning three out of the last four matches between these teams.
Kolkata franchise have long been considered among the premier T20 sides in the IPL. Over time they have cemented themselves into its ranks, winning an unprecedented 100 T20 matches since 2008.
Even amid their recent slump, KKR have not given up hope of reaching the play-offs and are still fighting hard for one of two spots.
As one of only two Indian teams to have won 100 T20 matches so far this season, beating CSK could help increase their chances of qualifying for semifinals.
KKR boasts an established domestic presence with many talented players on their squad, such as Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa, but also includes South African fast bowler Marchant de Lange as an addition.
Furthermore, they acquired West Indian spinner Sunil Narine at auction using their RTM card while keeping opener Chris Lynn and left-handed batsman Shubman Gill as members of their side.
Urvil Patel should provide an extra batting boost. He was the highest six-hitter at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and can provide some much-needed runs at No. 3.
Moeen Ali will likely keep his place, while Jadeja could come in to cover for Russell’s absence. KKR are hopeful Rinku Singh will return from injury soon, in which case they might select him at No. 3 behind Kohli; otherwise they might opt for specialist offspinner instead.
Match Predictions
Kolkata Knight Riders have won two consecutive matches and appear poised to qualify for the playoffs, but will face a challenging opponent when facing Chennai Super Kings at home next time out – it promises to be an intriguing battle between former champions who have had differing fortunes this season.
KKR will aim to continue their winning run against CSK with another victory and Sunil Narine can play an instrumental role in that goal.
The right-handed opener has been in exceptional form for his host club and should be one of the main batsmen to watch out for this match, followed by Rahmanullah Gurbaz who excelled against Rajasthan Royals last time out.
CSK have struggled in their middle-order against Delhi Capitals and need to find the ideal balance in batting to be effective against them.
Captain MS Dhoni must ensure this area of play improves, so hopefully CSK can look forward to improved performances from their middle order.
Vijay Shankar and Jamie Overton have been outstanding bowling performers for the hosts this season, leading the bowling department in a manner befitting of champions like themselves.
Both will be essential against an ineffective CSK batting line-up; supported by world class spinner Varun Chakaravarthy who thrives under these conditions – they should look to exploit weaknesses among CSK batsmen by exploiting this kind of pitch and pitch conditions.
