Afghanistan
Afghan cricket has evolved significantly over recent years and now stands as an international powerhouse. After competing strongly in the 2023 World Cup and winning four one-day series against England, Pakistan, South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively.
Success at this tournament bolstered their claim to full ICC membership, which they eventually attained at the London Annual Conference on 29 June 2013.
This advancement took them from affiliate status gained in 2001 and gave them access to bilateral series and funding opportunities.
Afghanistan has developed an effective spin-heavy bowling attack honed on uneven refugee camp pitches in Peshawar where many players practiced amid displacement; their bowlers exploit turning conditions effectively and are competitive against better-resourced associates.
Afghanistan also possess strong batsmen such as Rashid Khan who come from poverty-stricken backgrounds but go on to earn millions through leagues such as IPL – directly benefitting families and communities in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan cricket team traveled to West Indies for its inaugural full series against one of the top-8-rated full members, having only previously competed against them in T20Is and one ODI matchups.
The series was completed unbeaten, marking an important step forward for the country as they look forward to entering into the next phase of football development. Afghanistan is expected to gain Test-playing status by 2019, although due to ongoing insecurity and security concerns this process may take longer than anticipated.
Their home ground is the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in UAE where former India pace bowler Lalchand Rajput coaches them. When playing ODIs and T20Is they wear blue shirts displaying both sponsor logos on the center front as well as manufacturer’s on the leading sleeve sleeve logo.
England
Afghanistan national cricket team represents Afghanistan at Test, One-Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 international matches.
Based out of Sharjah with Brendon McCullum as coach, this side has made significant strides since winning Division Five of ICC World Cricket League 2009. This achievement marked an important step in becoming full members of ICC.
The ACB hopes that Afghanistan will reach the top six ODI teams and the top three in both T20I and ODI by 2025, along with being in the top three of both T20I and ODI matches by then.
They are working toward this end by creating a professional league to aid player development; though Afghanistan’s cricket infrastructure is still emerging, talent has already made its presence felt; many players began their careers playing informal tape-ball cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan where many began their careers honed their craft; creating a merit-based system which rewards skill rather than patronage allowing team players to support themselves financially through earnings generated from playing cricket allowing them to support themselves financially through income derived through earnings that now enable them to support themselves and their families through earnings generated through cricketing earnings!
Afghanistan has an extensive cricketing tradition and currently sits as an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
On June 22, 2017 however, Afghanistan will upgrade to Full Membership status, permitting them to compete against Full Members in both ODIs and T20Is.
Afghanistan will make their debut appearance at an International Cricket Council tournament against England this Wednesday, in what should be an intense and tightly-contested contest between two of the best sides in world cricket. The result could determine Jos Buttler’s future as England captain.
ODI
Afghanistan cricket team currently occupies 13th spot worldwide in International One-Day Cricket rankings and their home ground is Sharjah Cricket Stadium in United Arab Emirates. Managed by Afghanistan Cricket Board – established in 2002 as a full member of International Cricket Council (ICC).
Afghanistan made their One Day International (ODI) debut against Bangladesh at Manuka Oval in Canberra, Australia on 13 February 2015 and lost by 105 runs.
Afghanistan was granted Test status by the International Cricket Council on 22 June 2017, becoming its 11th full member and first Muslim-majority country to attain this distinction. Their home test grounds will now be at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in United Arab Emirates under current head coach Rashid Khan.
In April 2013, Afghanistan Cricket Board received $422,000 from the International Cricket Council as part of their Targeted Assistance and Performance program, similar to what has been provided to countries such as Netherlands, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan cricket team jersey consists of a blue shirt featuring red, white and black stripes with the ACB logo in the center chest.
They wear baggy red caps or sun hats adorned with the ACB logo; for ODI matches this is displayed prominently while manufacturer’s logos appear non-leading sleeves; during T20I matches batsmen wear blue helmets featuring tricolor flags displayed above ACB logo. 2024 also saw ACB introduce new home kits for its cricketers.
T20I
Afghanistan national cricket team has quickly established themselves as one of the premier international teams, currently ranking fifth globally for Twenty20I matches.
The International Cricket Council uses a special system to track how teams perform in this shortest format and use wins over their rivals as a way of ranking teams higher; teams with more wins than opponents receive more points and therefore move up in rankings.
Afghanistan made their World Cup debut in 2015, reaching the group stage and finishing with two wins and one defeat.
They began against Zimbabwe with Afghanistan winning the toss and opting to field; unfortunately England set an aggressive target that they eventually achieved within eight overs.
As a response to the attacks, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) decided in solidarity with victims to postpone all matches against Pakistan and instead host Sri Lanka as well as another opponent despite security concerns. This marked a dramatic departure from previous bilateral series which continued regardless of security risks.
In March 2017, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced a full series against Ireland at Greater Noida consisting of three Twenty20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals (ODIs). This marked Afghanistan’s inaugural series against one of ICC’s top-8-rated full members – making history!
Afghan spin-heavy bowling attack, first developed at refugee camps in Peshawar and rapidly progressing through domestic leagues to international competition has successfully exploited turning conditions to compete with more well-resourced associates.
Their rapid ascension from domestic to international competition offered a rare sense of national unity amid ongoing conflict and ethnic fragmentation; cricket providing psychological resilience as well as civic engagement across Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara and Uzbek lines.
Match Summary
Afghanistan’s rise to international cricket prominence is one of its greatest success stories. Originating in refugee camps in Pakistan during war years of the 80s and ’90s, cricket quickly caught on among Afghan youth who returned home after years away in refugee camps in Pakistan. A Cricket Board was later formed in 1995 before joining ICC affiliate membership in 2001.
At the 2015 Cricket World Cup, they made their debut and defeated Scotland in their opening game before losing all other matches and being knocked out during group stage play. But their performances at this tournament convinced the International Cricket Council (ICC) of their ability to compete with more established teams going forward.
In April 2013, Afghanistan received US$422,000 (approximately 22 million AFN) as the first grant from an International Cricket Council three-year support programme for Associate and Affiliate members to develop more competitive teams.
This grant marked its largest grant ever given to a new member nation; part of an overall effort to establish Afghanistan as a full test nation.
At the 2011-13 ICC World Cricket League Championship, Afghanistan played two ODIs against Canada and UAE; later that December they also competed in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, facing both Netherlands and Ireland as opponents.[55] These matches marked the inaugural official ODIs between an Affiliate nation and Test-playing nations.
Afghanistan has earned a strong reputation for their attacking play and exploiting limited-overs cricket to its maximum.
They also possess two outstanding spinners in Mohammad Shahzad and Rashid Khan who regularly turn out impressive performances during T20I matches against India, scoring 311/5 to beat them out of contention and win by five wickets – an unprecedented T20I performance from non-Test playing nations, as evidenced by their victory against reigning champions India in March 2025. Afghanistan’s triumph against their former foe India highlighted their growing strength against all formats as this competition intensifies.
