England were put through their paces at Eden Park, with wind and boundaries working against them. Yet Brook was unfazed, scoring freely to hit nine fours and one six.
Rain showers were intermittent, coming and going, pausing play briefly before scheduling another start time of 10pm; but in the end it never materialised and play was officially called off at 9.59pm, as reflected in the England Cricket Team Vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Stats that recorded the match as abandoned due to weather interruptions.

England was looking for its fifth World Cup victory in succession and faced off against India at Lord’s for a record fifth final, only for Ben Stokes to remain composed and help England prevail by 14 runs. Lord’s hosted an unprecedented five final and it will long be remembered as an epic contest.
The victorious side was better at adapting to a pitch that had previously shown signs of misbehaving and hardening over time, than its rival.
England bowlers assessed conditions accurately, remaining effective without overdoing it with their attacks – keeping New Zealand scores well under par.
Ben Stokes and Joe Root made an excellent decision by electing to bat first on an unsuitable wicket; however, their top order batting wasn’t particularly effective, with only Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow scoring more than one run per ball.
England needed a large partnership on the final wicket in order to take victory; with Ben Stokes contributing an outstanding century partnership on that wicket!
England’s second innings batting performance was vastly improved from their opening innings batting. Their top three batsmen scored an aggregate total of 146 runs while also holding onto Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor’s wickets, giving England an edge due to New Zealand bowlers not taking full advantage of a placid pitch and windy conditions.
The final had its fair share of controversy, from an umpiring error leading to England’s wicket to New Zealand losing by an overwhelming margin.
But after much drama had subsided and newcomer New Zealand were ultimately defeated, serving as an excellent advertisement for international cricket while inspiring new generations of fans to pick up the sport themselves.
Furthermore, its success will have an effect on future plans by the ICC for white-ball cricket tournaments like this tournament – it demonstrated their ability to provide more competition than traditional Test matches; with New Zealand hosting England next starting at Eden Park from 2022 onwards.
ODIs
England has won 45 of 96 One Day Internationals played between these teams and has an excellent record against New Zealand at home ground Wellington, having won three straight ODIs against them since 2015.
Kent batsman Zak Crawley made his ODI debut alongside Lancashire seamer Luke Wood, while Sam Curran and Durham seamer Liam Dawson will make theirs; all-rounder Kyle Jamieson has unfortunately been ruled out of this series with a stiff side.
England captain James Anderson scored an outstanding century to put England in an advantageous position at the end of their opening innings.
But Black Caps’ tailenders, led by Zac Foulkes and Blair Tickner, managed to get back into contention through some powerful hitting.
New Zealand was in trouble in their pursuit of 223 to win, losing wickets regularly as their chase faltered, but Foulkes and Tickner kept New Zealand alive through some disciplined batting that kept New Zealand within striking distance of victory.
New Zealand openers Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway endured a thorough examination from Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler but emerged unscathed.
However, New Zealand suffered a late collapse with Tom Latham falling for a duck off Jos Buttler who earlier ran out Conway at non-striker’s end.
The Black Caps struggled to deal with the extra pace of James Neesham and Ben Duckett, with both bowlers conceding many runs in their opening overs.
Finally they were caught when Neesham hit Adil Rashid for six and Mitchell clubbed an Archer short ball over Buttler for six – giving his side control with two overs remaining.
Tests
England will travel to New Zealand in 2024 and play three Test matches across Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton as part of an ECB series announced earlier. The schedule and venues have already been confirmed.
Harry Brook has selected an impressive squad for England’s tour. Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Jacob Bethell will have an opportunity to prove their worth for selection in an Ashes squad alongside Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jofra Archer in a high-profile white-ball series against Australia.
England cricket players have been involved in a number of limited-overs games this winter. They were part of the England Lions side that defeated India 3-0 in Champions Trophy play and faced Bangladesh Tigers in five-match series which concluded with a draw. Now they will join up with some players like Ben Stokes and James Taylor who haven’t been as active.
Both teams will look to take control of the series in Christchurch on Tuesday when England face New Zealand in the second Test match, after England have won both earlier games while New Zealand have come away empty handed from both encounters – leaving their balance at one each going into Auckland’s third test match.
Kyle Jamieson has been forced out of the remainder of the ODI series with a stiff side, having failed to recover in time for Hamilton match day. Blair Tickner has been added as his replacement.
T20s
England will host New Zealand for three T20 matches this month, beginning with two at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 18 and 20.
Black Caps batsman Kane Williamson will miss due to family commitments; wicketkeeper-batsman Mitchell Santner returns after missing recent T20 home series against Australia due to a groin injury; all-rounder Rachin Ravindra rejoins after suffering facial trauma; however seam bowler Ben Sears remains unavailable due to hamstring concerns.
This series forms part of both teams’ preparations for the T20 World Cup in February, with limited T20 matches scheduled afterwards. England are playing in their penultimate T20 series before starting Ashes as usual without regular skipper Eoin Morgan, Jofra Archer and Ben Duckett who have all been rested to avoid fatigue ahead of the Ashes series against Australia.
Captain Harry Brook has selected an experienced squad including first-time T20 call-ups Zak Crawley and Brydon Carse. New Zealand have played 27 T20 matches against England, winning 16 matches to their hosts while 10 ended without results (one match had no result).
