Toss

The toss is the first major decision of every match and has an enormous effect on its outcome. Captains meet 30 minutes prior to play to exchange squad selection sheets before tossing a coin and deciding whether bat or field first will commence play.

It is an arduous choice that can drastically change the flow of the contest and may ultimately have an effect on its result.

Cricket tosses mark the official starting of every match, and any matches abandoned prior to being decided don’t count in statistical records – ensuring fair games for both sides, and giving each team equal chances to succeed in winning.

Decisions surrounding whether to bat or bowl can be crucial, with those winning the toss typically having an advantage.

Yet captains frequently question its significance – specifically how much this advantage might be? Our data can provide answers here: on average, teams that win toss have an edge against rival teams; however, its size depends on multiple factors which we will explore further in our next article. Stay tuned!

Ball 1

Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra may take time to establish themselves, but when they do so India could potentially close this deal quickly.

But they must ensure they keep pushing forward and scoring boundaries; otherwise Sri Lanka could force an extra over.

And they must remain wary, because India’s bowlers have proven so dominant. Varun was particularly impressive in his opening over, nailing a brilliant yorker to concede only two runs and Arshdeep then bowled an over of immense significance which set off another dramatic sequence in this crucial encounter.

Nissanka kept the run rate under control and managed to reunite KJP and Asalanka, forcing him to work hard towards reaching 100 runs; although he achieved success early in the final over, he eventually fell victim to that ball that fell from above him and fell short of reaching this feat.

India take an 8 wicket victory to secure their place in the final. They have now won five out of six matches this tournament with one being tied due to rain, but this final will prove much tougher!

Ball 2

At stake isn’t just two competing teams – both top sides in this tournament are competing to reach Dubai for a showpiece final.

India are in an advantageous position with 100 runs scored so far by George and Malhotra’s partnership putting India into an advantageous stance; just 114 more runs needed for victory!

Sri Lanka are in danger of falling behind but a review saves them. At first glance, an umpire at the bowler’s end claims there was a gap between bat and ball but standing umpire Gazi Sohel upholds his decision that there is none.

Varun is an outstanding bowler in his own right and is responsible for many runs being conceded with both pace and spin, leading Sri Lanka’s batsmen into difficulty on many occasions. He’s largely been responsible for their struggles.

Sri Lanka are still struggling, despite having an extremely powerful middle order that can score at an impressive rate.

Nissanka had looked promising before being run out by Kuldeep Yadav. India are clearly in good form heading towards their final clash against Australia in this contest.

Ball 3

IND is one over away from an impressive victory! Their boys have shown incredible confidence as they approach each task with great ease and are confidently making progress towards victory.

Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra have provided guidance in form of an impressive century partnership to steer IND youngsters towards an outstanding win!

Arshdeep to Shanaka, out! Caught by Jitesh Sharma. This was an extremely difficult ball to play as it was full and wide outside off, Shanaka throws his bat at it but misses its line, then the ball flew towards deep backward point where Jitesh Sharma made no mistakes taking a quick catch – this poor shot by Sri Lanka could have resulted in an easier win for them!

At that crucial juncture in the match, Shanaka made sure they wouldn’t lose it by running across and hitting a powerful four-smash over mid on for four to keep his side alive. On his third consecutive ball he then hit an enormous six, smashing it over long off for yet another boundary boundary to move up to 100! In addition, Nissanka scored half-century in his innings too and it is clear both teams will be disappointed they cannot advance to the final.

Ball 4

After some initial stumbles, Nissanka is back on form and leading Sri Lanka forward with his T20I bat. His maiden ton is set for imminent success – and Sri Lanka stands to benefit greatly.

Arshdeep bowled an accurate short delivery that hit him hard around his body from around the wicket and then flew past both keepers before striking behind to land in front of the stumps, but Arshdeep was caught off his bowling.

Arshdeep attempted to hit short delivery towards body but it hit thick outside edge flier that passed past both keepers. Arshdeep asked to review but Umpire Gazi Sohel maintained their decision that stands.

The final will come down to the last over, marking India’s debut appearance in a Super Over. They have won five of six such matches played so far including an unexpected rain-affected tie against Pakistan in 2022.

Indian batsmen have already proved what they can do under pressure conditions while their bowlers performed admirably in a reduced format match. It will be another opportunity for India to showcase its quality against Pakistan with another big win.

George and Malhotra conducted themselves with restraint to build up an impressive 114-run partnership and lead India to victory, leaving both teams tied on points after eight matches apiece; India are more confident of progressing further due to their superior run rate.

Ball 5

Now with three needed in the Super Over, all depends on this over. Gambhir asks Arshdeep to bowl and he delivers in spades; first up he bowls Nissanka who seemed set for victory before Arshdeep struck.

Malhotra attempts another big shot from his legs but misses, flying high into the air and past mid on for four. India needs only to maintain their run rate to secure victory.

Ball 4 – Arshdeep to Kamindu, 1 run; low full-toss outside off, shuffles across to try for the scoop but thick edge flies past bat and rolls back into play, Kamindu dives backwards but fails.

Sri Lanka appeal, but umpire Gazi Sohel upholds his original decision allowing India to advance. India won their six consecutive T20I matches via Super Over or Bowl Out and had incredible young talent like George and Malhotra leading them as well as quality depth available.

What an unbelievable game this has been! And an extraordinary day for young India players like these young warriors.
