South Africa: Quinton de Kock
Quinton de Kock, known for his aggressive left-hand batting and ability to quickly score runs with sixes, has established himself as one of the finest wicket-keeper batsmen of his generation since being born on 17 December 1992 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
De Kock has established himself as an integral member of South African teams across both ODIs and T20Is due to his quick batting style and propensity for hitting big sixes, scoring 19 T20I fifties along the way. Additionally, De Kock is widely revered for his expert glovework behind the stumps; in fact he holds joint fastest wicket-keeper record (alongside Hashim Amla).
De Kock’s performance against Afghanistan provides a perfect illustration of his impactful nature in team sports. He scored an unbeaten 59 off 41 balls to set up South African total of 323. Additionally, De Kock effecting six dismissals – five catchouts among them! This record surpasses Adam Gilchrist and Sarfraz Ahmed by two.
Ryan Rickleton
Rickleton became the first South African wicketkeeper-batsman ever to score a T20 century on debut at Champions Trophy and continued his excellent form throughout. He hit seven fours and one six in a 103-ball innings that helped South African post their second highest total of the tournament.
His partnership of 109 runs with Captain Temba Bavuma (58) laid down an anchor that enabled Rassie van der Dussen (52) and Aiden Markram to add over one run per ball to Proteas total.
South Africa held off Afghanistan to win one of the most dramatic T20 World Cup matches ever seen. Rahmat Shah scored 90 but they ultimately fell short in an exciting second super over.
South Africa appeared to be on their way when they needed only 11 off three balls in Lungi Ngidi’s first super over. Unfortunately, though, after missing a yorker and becoming greedy for lower-order wickets in his previous over, Dewald Brevis pulled a six past long-on in the final ball for South Africa to secure victory and advance into the quarter-finals. Afghanistan came back fighting with Mohammad Nabi receiving a sanction after striking Stubbs in the chest during this over, but Stubbs delivered another final-ball six to secure victory and secure passage into quarter-finals!
Dewald Brevis
Dewald Brevis may no longer be 20, but he still remembers how to play like his teenage self. At 19, Dewald became the top run-scorer at the Under-19 World Cup – scoring 506 runs across six matches – and making headlines with his performance; thus earning himself selection by Mumbai Indians during their IPL auction later that year.
Since then, Brevis has become an indispensable member of South Africa national cricket team. He helped win the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as part of a right-handed batsman and occasional leg spin bowler squad, and will now join Hampshire Hawks ahead of 2025 Vitality Blast season.
Baby AB Brevis has made waves ever since his debut for the Hawks with his uncanny resemblance to AB de Villiers. Joining with Lhuan-dre Pretorius as his countryman and will bat in the middle order while occasionally bowling leg spin.
David Miller
David Miller is a veteran South African limited-overs batsman renowned for his aggression and match-winning performances in high pressure games. A frequent contributor in key ICC tournaments, Miller also regularly contributes runs for Proteas T20I team and excels in franchise T20 leagues such as Indian Premier League (IPL). Here he played for Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants teams.
Miller stands out with his distinct playing style, blending power hitting with subtlety and timing to produce one of the most impactful finishes in modern white-ball cricket.
Miller made his ODI debut in May 2010, and since has established himself as an integral member of South Africa’s limited-overs batting lineup. A powerful middle-order batsman capable of anchoring chases or playing crucial late innings knocks. Furthermore, Miller boasts excellent shot making skills and is an experienced finisher in T20I cricket.
Kagiso Rabada
The South Africa national cricket team, commonly referred to as the Proteas, are a professional team representing their home country internationally in international cricket. Based out of Centurion in Johannesburg, they compete in all three formats of cricket:
Test, ODI and T20I matches. Over their long history of success in international cricket they have won multiple ICC titles – currently ranking second globally for Tests while fifth for both ODIs and T20Is as of July 2025.
The Proteas were first established as a professional team in 1888-89 and competed domestic and international tournaments until the 1960s, when their opposition to apartheid led them to be banned from international cricket altogether. However, this ban was lifted in 1991 and they have become one of the premier sides across all formats of cricket since.
Kagiso Rabada is a fast bowler capable of disrupting any batsman in his path, and was an integral component of Proteas bowling against Afghanistan, taking six wickets during their innings despite an error while taking the final one (overstepping).
Unfortunately, Noor Ahmed escaped punishment when Rabada overstepped in taking it and gave Afghanistan enough leeway to force two Super Overs.
Azmatullah Omarzai
Azmatullah Omarzai has quickly established himself as one of Afghanistan’s most valuable assets with his fearless batting game and adept bowling abilities, earning an international debut in 2021 and excelling during the 2023 ODI World Cup by amassing 353 runs while also taking seven wickets. That performance earned Omarzai an IPL contract and cemented his status as an up-and-comer.
Omarzai has made great strides since then, becoming one of the key figures in Afghanistan’s double Super Over victory against UAE, scoring 40 runs and taking four wickets while helping keep their slim Super 8 hopes alive. UAE captain Muhammad Waseem recognized his talent, even calling him a world-class allrounder!
Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott has watched Omarzai become one of his team’s next generation stars, attributing his rapid ascension to playing franchise leagues around the globe and their experience gained. Gulbadin Naib also witnessed this change, attesting to how expectations from his teammates have grown with him: “Azmatullah is one of our best players”, as stated following their loss against South Africa.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz
Rahmanullah Gurbaz has quickly established himself as one of Afghanistan’s key batsmen in limited-overs cricket. Batting at the top of his order, his aggressive approach is tailored perfectly for T20 cricket while developing in terms of maturity and situational awareness over time.
After making his international debut in 2019, he quickly made an impressionful first impression by scoring a century against Ireland – becoming the first Afghan batter ever to do so in an ODI match! It was an outstanding innings and set him up perfectly for further success in 2019.
Since then, he has become a regular part of the national team’s white-ball teams and trusted with key responsibilities during high-pressure matches and global tournaments, such as 2021-2024 ICC T20 World Cups.
Now he is an established member of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad in Indian Premier League (IPL). Although his opportunities in franchise format may be limited, this experience has helped him mature as a player who knows how to balance risk with responsibility and learn more about T20 cricket than ever before.
