Sri Lanka National Cricket Team is the national cricket team representing Sri Lanka at international tournaments. They boast an illustrious history, having won 1996 Cricket World Cup as well as placing runners-up at both 2007 and 2011 ICC T20 World Cups.

T20Is
Bangladesh National Cricket Team will visit Sri Lanka from June – July 2025 to play T20I matches at Colombo Oval, Pallekele International Stadium and Shere Bangla National Stadium. In addition, two Test matches and three ODIs will also take place; it marks their first tour since 2006. This marks their inaugural trip since 2006.
The International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport’s global governing body, hosts an international twenty-over cricket competition each year known as the ICC Twenty20 Championship.
As one of three formats recognized by ICC, this premier competition for twenty-over cricket takes place annually since 2008 with its winner qualifying for ICC World Cup qualification. Teams play six matches across round-robin format during each championship event.
Twenty20 cricket is an exhilarating and rapid form of the game that offers fast action with each over limited to 20 overs – providing exciting high-octane entertainment as the top players rise to meet it and show their abilities before an audience of spectators.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh teams have met six times in bilateral T20I series and three ICC tri-nation and Asia cups; Sri Lanka won four series and two World Cup matches while Bangladesh only managed to capture one series and one World Cup match during this period.
Both countries have produced many talented and entertaining cricketers over time, such as Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim – players renowned for making cricket more widely enjoyed and contributing to both teams’ successes. Tests
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have competed in numerous Test matches against one another over time, creating thrilling moments and nail-biting finishes in each game. ODIs
One Day Internationals (ODIs) are limited-overs cricket matches held every four years between international teams with equal status.
Each ODI features 50 overs per innings for seven hours’ play and are overseen by the International Cricket Council (ICC). They are considered the pinnacle of limited-overs cricket; winning teams qualify for participation in world cup tournaments.
Both teams have met in 57 ODI matches; Sri Lanka has won 43 matches while Bangladesh has 12. They also competed in three ODI tri-nation series and six bilateral T20I series against one another; Sri Lanka boasting three ICC trophies (1 Cricket World Cup and 2 T20 World Cups), compared with none for Bangladesh.
On 27 August 2001 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa – as part of the inaugural game under the new ODI format – both sides scored 212 runs between them in their first innings; Shehan Madushanka of Sri Lanka notching up an unassisted five for Sri Lanka.
Unfortunately the second day was washed out, leading only 61 overs to be bowled during all. Milan Rathnayake, Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanvir Islam made their ODI debut for their respective winning side respectively.
T20I Series
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have participated in six bilateral T20I series as well as three Asia Cups and one tri-nation series, winning four series each;
Sri Lanka holds the higher place with four T20I victories and two Asia Cup wins; Bangladesh won just one T20I match but managed a tri-nation series victory; among the teams, Sri Lanka currently ranks second while Bangladesh ranks eighth by the ICC’s T20I rankings.
Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have competed in 108 T20I matches against one another; Sri Lanka winning 77 of them while Bangladesh taking 23. The two have met several high-profile tournaments such as 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and 2015 ICC Champions Trophy as well as several ODI and Test matches between them.
From its launch, Sri Lankan players have played regularly in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), such as Rangana Herath, Shehan Madushanka, Naveed Nawaz and Chandika Hathurusinghe. Many also serve as coaches within an event with such strong Sri Lankan links as BPL.
Over recent years, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have developed a fierce rivalry in all formats of cricket, and this rivalry has extended onto social media, with each side often posting content which offends each other’s views – most recently when Bangladesh national team players posted a video mocking Sri Lankan fans and team captain Angelo Mathews from Sri Lankan team.
In June 2025, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will go head-to-head in an all-format tour, starting with an ODI in Colombo before playing five T20Is in Dhaka.
