1. Napier Test
Since Gautam Gambhir took over as India coach, his team has played aggressive red-ball cricket. India won against Bangladesh despite rain stopping play nearly three days early at Kanpur Test and overcame an enormous deficit to tie New Zealand in Bengaluru last week.
Indian cricket suffered an incredible blow when Napier defeated them, yet Gambhir saved the match and led India to a draw when his marathon innings of 137 runs saved it and ensured it. Rain had reduced play to 34 overs per side.
2. Christchurch Test
On a similar ground as their 2023 collapse, India dispelled any fears with an impressive performance against New Zealand in their inaugural home Test match of 2024-25 at Ahmedabad. Sanju Samson produced an incredible 89 from 46 balls while Abhishek Sharma scored 51 off 21 balls before Ishan Kishan hit 54 from just 25 deliveries as co-hosts India posted 255-5 and thrilled their enthusiastic Ahmedabad crowd.
The Black Caps were beset by injuries throughout their batting line-up, from wicketkeeper Tom Blundell’s hamstring strain and allrounder Nathan Smith’s side strain to only having Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes as fit fast bowlers able to face an imposing target of 531 in their second innings – yet they remained resilient in defeating Sri Lanka by four runs in their final innings.
Shai Hope and Justin Greaves joined forces to save West Indies from defeat on the fourth day at Christchurch after they were reduced to just 167 in their first innings. Thanks to their strong resistance, West Indies shared the second highest fourth innings total in Test history before eventually playing out an exciting draw match.
New Zealand’s inaugural Test took place at Lancaster Park, Christchurch on 10 January 1930 against an MCC team coached by Harold Gilligan. Stewie Dempster recorded its inaugural century, marking New Zealand’s formal entry into international cricket. Although only small crowds attended; Hagley Oval saw under 4,000 on day 1, this match nonetheless marked an important step in cricket’s slow growth while simultaneously creating one of its greatest rivalries.
3. Kolkata Test
India’s dramatic victory at Kolkata in the Border-Gavaskar series remains the greatest comeback in cricket history. Australia had amassed 445 runs before dismissing India for 171 on day 4 and forcing follow-on play. But India responded with an incredible display of batting and bowling prowess – VVS Laxman’s stunning 109 run, along with an unprecedented 335 run partnership between Navjot Sidhu and Rahul Dravid, put India in an advantageous position to win, setting into motion its historic triumphant win. The rest, as they say, is history. Anil Kumble’s incredible 5/62 bowling performance secured India victory. Images such as Harbhajan Singh’s offbreaks spitting from length and cutting through turn, Laxman dancing one way then another while driving through pitch, and Shane Warne’s furious look when India passed 400 still remain fresh in my memory.
India and New Zealand will square off in a similar tale in this year’s T20 World Cup final as India beat England by seven runs at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to advance and claim their record third title. Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah played key roles for India during that thrilling encounter and will likely prove pivotal again this time around.
The Black Caps will attempt to go down in history as the first team ever to defend a T20 World Cup, led by Matt Henry’s unstoppable pace and Finn Allen’s remarkable century – both key contributors for New Zealand as they look for their maiden tournament victory. Sunday will provide an epic battle as both teams aim for an unprecedented third World Cup crown at home!
4. Mumbai Test
India defeated New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium despite their best efforts, taking an important lead in the five-match series with their victory. Following this success, they celebrated with several players running around holding up trophies while members of support staff showcased bhangra dance moves to show their delight with India’s victory.
Sachin Tendulkar dedicated his 41st century, which helped India complete the highest fourth-innings score ever seen in Test cricket, to those affected by Mumbai terrorist attacks. Virat Kohli had earlier broken his own record for most runs scored by any Indian batsman against New Zealand with 299.
India made history during this match as well, with Ishan Kishan scoring a 43-ball century against New Zealand – setting an all-time T20 International scoring record against them; Bumrah took four wickets at once with four scalps taken for 4/15 wicket-taking haul at World T20 Final.
New Zealand and India have long met on the big stage of ICC tournament knockout matches, often trading wins between themselves. Their rivalry has seen both teams emerge victorious at various points during tournaments; however, since 2019, New Zealand have held an edge against India in most ICC tournament knockout matches.
The 2026 T20 World Cup Final was one of the most tense moments in this intense rivalry. Before an audience of over 100,000 enthusiastic and predominantly blue-clad supporters in Ahmedabad, India dismantled New Zealand in an impressive runout and became the first team ever to defend men’s T20 World Cup – ending their run of near misses at reaching ODI World Cup semi-finals three times since 2015.
5. Champions Trophy Final
The 2025 Champions Trophy tournament took place from 19 February to 9 March 2025 and featured matches hosted by Pakistan, but due to India’s boycott of Pakistan most matches took place in Dubai instead. India defeated New Zealand in the final game to claim their third Champions Trophy title.
This final was an exciting, high-level contest between Australia and New Zealand that showcased both teams at their best. On paper, Australia were superior but New Zealand stood out with a magnificent team performance – Chris Cairns’ century is remembered by many fans as symbolising New Zealand’s resilience and ability to come back from being behind against an intimidating opponent.
New Zealand’s batting was fantastic in the final, with Kane Williamson, Colin de Grandhomme and Matt Henry all scoring centuries. However, their bowlers did the damage as Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav both collected two-wicket hauls during this match.
Rohit Sharma made an outstanding start to India’s reply with an audacious six off the first ball and an innings of 106 from 76 balls; sharing an opening stand of 105 with Shubman Gill. However, New Zealand quickly clawed their way back into the contest through two incredible one-handed catches from Glenn Phillips at extra cover to dismiss Gill and another fantastic catch by Mitchell from behind wicket to remove Kohli in subsequent over.
Rohit and Virat showed remarkable team spirit to guide India to victory despite facing serious pressure, thanks to an incredible collective effort that saw all players contributing toward a win.
