Tests

Few Test series have left as deep an impactful legacy in cricket as this one. Led by two iconic cricket figures – Frank Worrell and Richie Benaud – this eventful series brought it all.

WI began their Test series poorly – they lost by five wickets to South Africa before suffering another setback when Port-of-Spain fell by ten wickets – before rallying with some outstanding performances in subsequent Tests.

Brian Lara’s 213 at Sabina Park set an exceptional career best and saw them edge out Australia by one wicket while Kim Hughes made a rearguard first innings hundred only for Clive Lloyd to come back from serious injury and strike out an outstanding first innings hundred to take Bridgetown by three wickets.

The fifth Test at the Gabba was an intriguing low-scoring affair; WI had the upper hand in terms of batting but were unable to take full advantage of their excellent bowling attack of Marshall, Ambrose and Walsh – new breed pace quartet for WI that excelled alongside established batsmen like Viv Richards’ team at Sydney in third Test; Adelaide hosted sixth and final Test was high-scoring affair until Sheahan and Connolly played out eleven overs to secure last-wicket draw!

This marks the first time in 18 years that the Windies won a Test series against Australia. Even despite losing many of their premier players such as Clarke, Johnson, Haddin, Watson and Rogers to retirement or injuries due to injuries or retirement respectively, their squad was strong enough to prevail at home; especially at their stadium where they have never lost to an opposition outside of the top 8 since 1998!

It speaks to the quality of younger players promoted into senior side – Shai Hope made his debut and immediately achieved 1000 T20I runs becoming second youngest player ever and second only behind Shimron Hetmyer on all-time list all-time list!

T20Is

With Andre Russell out due to injury, Windies were easily defeated in three-match T20I series hosted by Australia. Tim David broke T20I records by hitting 11 sixes during his 37-ball century as Australia easily took out this contest – Australia’s fourth consecutive triumph against West Indies this format.

Australia are making history this T20 series by becoming the first team ever to win one in the Caribbean region, due to West Indies lack of depth and quality in their T20I side.

Since 2000, they have only won one overseas T20I series against one of the top 8 teams – South Africa in 2009; homely defeat by Australia followed in 2022/23 even when Shimron Hetmyer passed 1,000 T20I runs despite becoming just 12th Windie Batsman to do so; their only consolation being Mitchell Starc was unavailable due to injury!

ODIs

Australia and West Indies have played 146 One Day Internationals (ODIs). Australia has won 79 games to the Windies’ 31 while there have also been three ties between them. Recently though, Australia’s home record against West Indies has made significant strides: they’ve won five out of six ODIs against them at home!

Australia will open their ODI series against the Windies with an away match at Port of Spain, before moving to St Kitts for another encounter and then Antigua and Barbuda for two more. Finally, St Lucia will play host to their series’ last matchup of 2018.

After concluding their ODI series, both teams will play one T20I each before entering Sydney for an official Test match. Both sides remain undefeated in T20Is with Windies leading 3-2 and Australia winning 2-1 respectively.

Windies will look to build off of their win in Port of Spain in the ODI series. Kieron Pollard returns as captain, while Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope lead their batting attack. Australia must find ways to avoid an unwanted whitewash against Windies.

Australia and Windies both feature some newcomers in their One Day International squads, with Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc making their ODI debuts for Australia respectively, while Sutherland and McDermott from Windies fast bowling squad.

Australia will remain formidable opponents despite these changes, having never lost at home against Windies and suffering just one overseas defeat against them since 2009/10.

For the Windies to win this match, they will need to perform at their very best. Their batsmen must increase their scoring output while bowlers need to improve discipline and accuracy; if this can happen successfully then their chances will improve significantly and they could possibly pull off an upset win; otherwise a continued struggle with the ball could spell trouble and force them back onto spinners as a backup strategy.

T20I Series

Twenty20 internationals are one-off matches played between two nations using the Twenty20 format of cricket, dating back to 2004. Since then, 76 nations, including all Test-playing nations, have taken part.

Australia won both games of their series played between Sydney and Melbourne easily with captain Steve Smith being awarded Man of the Match both times while their bowlers took six wickets (Mitchell Starc (4) Josh Hazlewood (2) Sean Abbott taking two).

India have enjoyed great success against Australia in T20Is in the recent past, winning seven out of their eight encounters and never suffering more than three defeats against them in any series. They will look to keep up their good form at this tournament.

Australia have included many players from their ODI series win against South Africa back into their squad, but one notable absence is Adam Zampa who will miss due to paternity leave.

Back-up keeper Josh Philippe and Ben McDermott should make most of this opportunity while Matthew Short may return later on with a calf injury; Ben Rohrer provides experience in middle order batting.

Jasprit Bumrah returns to India’s squad following his outstanding performance at the Asia Cup, with Nitish Kumar Reddy taking his place. Rohit Sharma, Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja – all recent top performers – are set to join him.
