The Trophy is currently played at the zonal level, with teams from North, South, East and West zones playing each other in four groups of eight teams. The winners of each group along with the best performing runner-up qualify for the quarter final stage directly. The rest of the runners-up enter through pre-quarter finals.
Samit Gohel smashed a sizzling 135 as Tripura crushed Arunachal Pradesh by 210 runs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy Plate Group match on Wednesday. The wicketkeeper-batsman hit 10 fours and five sixes in his 128-ball innings as the hosts racked up 336 for 4. Rajat Dey (54) and K B Pawan (64) also contributed to the total before a ruthless Arunachal Pradesh were bundled out for just 126 in the 40th over.
In the other game, Meghalaya beat Sikkim by 164 runs to move up to fourth place in the table. Chirag Khurana scored a century for the visitors and was supported by Larry Sangma (69). Meghalaya’s bowlers took regular wickets, with Dippu Sangma (3/20) and Akash Choudhary (4/16) doing the damage.
A win for Meghalaya against second-placed Nagaland on Saturday would give them a chance to secure a berth in the quarter finals. They are currently on eight points, but a loss will see them slip to sixth spot behind Bihar, who are on 16 points. It will be interesting to watch how the other top-five teams fare in the remaining matches of the round robin phase.
