1. Test Matches
Test cricket is the longest form of women’s international cricket, featuring matches between two full member nations of the International Cricket Council with equal playing rights. Since the inaugural Women’s Test match was played in December 1934, 149 have taken place with far fewer scheduled each year due to increased focus on Women’s One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals instead of Test matches.
England’s players remain committed to the format, and want more women’s Test matches played – as demonstrated by captain Heather Knight’s plea to ICC chief executive officer Raheem Shah for more Tests to be scheduled in England’s home summer of 2025, especially Lord’s.
On Friday, 10 July at Lord’s, the third and final Test will take place – marking a key milestone in women’s cricket by being the inaugural Women’s Rothesay Test ever played there! This momentous occasion provides a tremendous opportunity to recognize all that women’s cricket offers its followers.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Nat Sciver-Brunt will look to add runs to their impressive tally as England seeks a series victory against India. Both players have been outstanding this summer, so their performances will be key if England are to claim its fourth successive ODI series win over their opponent.
2. ODIs
India Women put up a formidable performance to beat England Women in the opening ODI of this series. India lost opener Pratika Rawal early, but Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur quickly got them back on track by scoring at over one run-a-ball rate and forcing spinners to change lengths for spinners to change. Jemimah Rodrigues became India Women’s 50th run chaser by breaking Veda Krishnamurthy’s record set back in 2016.
England appeared on course to claim victory when they reached 288/8 after 50 overs, thanks to Heather Knight’s superb century off 86 balls – she became only the eighth English player ever to feature in 300 or more international matches! Knight was assisted by Nat Sciver-Brunt (38) who put on a stand of 113 with Knight.
But England ultimately fell short when they needed to score 36 in 10 overs with six wickets remaining and just Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont at the crease for a start, only for Deepti Sharma to rip through them quickly in the 16th over before Amanjot Kaur smacked two boundaries off her first ball in the last over but England were unable to achieve what was required of them for victory.
Smriti Mandhana smashed an unbeaten 97 in 20 overs for India against England at Lord’s, including 12 fours and one six. Amanjot Kaur also scored off two balls to help India to their highest total ever in women’s ODI history – beating England by five wickets at Lord’s.
3. T20Is
Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) are an exciting form of cricket. Their rules encourage aggressive batting and fast scoring while giving bowlers the chance to take wickets quickly; creating a balance between hitting big and taking wickets that makes T20I matches highly-anticipated events to watch!
Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues each scored centuries, leading India to a massive total of 168/5 in 20 overs. England failed to reach this target and could only manage 168/5 in reply, with Danni Wyatt-Hodge scoring 56 runs as top run scorer on their side.
India was victorious against England for the first time ever in a multi-game T20I series against them after having previously lost all six. Their victory gave India a 3-2 edge in this five-match series.
Deepti Sharma became only the second Indian player after Charlotte Edwards to reach 300 international wickets during this match, while Sophie Ecclestone became both England’s first left-arm spinner and youngest T20I player to reach this mark. She bowled the final over of this T20I.
This match marked an historic achievement for India as it marked the first time that their women’s national cricket team received equal pay to its male counterparts – long overdue and will hopefully set a precedent among professional sports teams across India. This move will certainly benefit female players while increasing their profile while encouraging more young girls to get involved in cricket, something we should all take pride in celebrating together.
4. One-day Internationals (ODIs)
Amanjot Kaur’s first-ever one-day international century helped India secure an impressive victory against England at Lord’s to start off Women’s World Cup 2025 in spectacular fashion. India made history yet again by successfully chasing down a target of more than 300 runs – after their impressive showing against South Africa earlier.
England won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 288/8 from their 50 overs with Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones making significant contributions. They shared 73 for the opening wicket until Deepti Sharma struck in the 16th over with Beaumont being bowled out for 22 by Deepti. Jones enjoyed an exceptional innings by hitting 56 off 68 balls while hitting eight fours along her route to success.
Once Jones fell to Nat Sciver-Brunt, India’s required run rate quickly increased as both Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma fell. Mandhana took control, hitting three boundaries during her 88-ball innings – until eventually caught by Emma Lamb off Sciver-Brunt in 42 overs, but by that point the damage had already been done.
With two overs remaining, India required another 107 runs to win and required a significant partnership at the top. Unfortunately for India however, Smriti Mandhana had been in great form this season until she was caught off Sciver-Brunt by Dean in the deep off Sciver-Brunt off Dean. With nine runs required from this final over, Jemimah Rodrigues and Amanjot Kaur formed an outstanding seventh wicket stand of 67 runs that helped India seal an emphatic win and their highest ever chase at Lord’s.
5. Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is)
The India Women’s National Cricket Team represents India internationally. Administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and full members of the International Cricket Council with Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) status – they currently rank second worldwide according to this index.
India had previously won both ODIs against England by wide margins and looked set to complete their whitewash of the series. But during a rain-affected third ODI at Lord’s, an intense game ensued all the way until Sophie Ecclestone and Paige Scholfield battled hard for England but Arundhati Reddy quickly dismissed both off two balls in one over to seal India’s victory and complete its clean sweep.
Smriti Mandhana’s impressive maiden ton helped India set an unprecedented first innings total of 173 for 4. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur also played brilliant middle order innings that helped surpass their previous mark of 162. India appeared headed toward an easy win until they dropped five wickets in one over.
Deepti Sharma’s two wickets in the fourth over set off an Indian blitzkrieg, but Sophie Ecclestone and Tammy Beaumont registered timely boundaries to give England hope. Shafali Verma then struck in her following over to dismiss Wyatt-Hodge for six and reduce England’s deficit to six runs with 28 required off the final four overs.
Jemimah Rodrigues hit an emphatic six over square leg to reduce India’s lead to three runs but it proved too little too late, as Amanjot Kaur hit another six off the opening ball of the final over to seal both match and series victory for India.
