De’Von Achane
De’Von Achane had an outstanding 2023, finishing as the half-PPR sixth running back and earning half-PPR sixth overall scoring. Achane ran 238 times for 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns while also collecting 67 receptions on 85 targets for 488 yards with four more scores – an outstanding performance by any standard! He remains unpredictable as an option in fantasy football but could provide reliable play in Miami offense that may struggle due to receiver Tyreek Hill (knee) and Jaylen Waddle absences.
The Dolphins defense set the pace early, forcing Buffalo’s opening drive to end in three-and-out. On their next possession, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with Achane on an eye-popping 4-yard touchdown pass for an eye-catching score; Achane later ran 67 yards to end zone during second quarter; his 8-yard TD run at start of third quarter made it 35-0!
In the fourth quarter, Achane scored another touchdown by running 35 yards up the left sideline before crashing into the end zone for another score. Meanwhile, defense held steady as Willie Gay Jr. and Bradley Chubb disrupted Allen’s pocket and provided disruption. Finally, Allen found tight end Jackson Hawes for 26-yard scoring pass to make it 44-7.
With their victory, the Dolphins secured their sixth straight win over the Bills since 1983 when Jim Kelly and Dan Marino led their respective franchises to two AFC East titles each. The rivalry dates back even further than this game however; having met 69 times between 1983-2015 with 42 Dolphin wins to 38 Bill wins, with 42 Dolphin wins overall leading overall by 42-38-5 margin.
The Buffalo Bills remain playoff contenders, but still require work in order to improve their win-loss record. Their roster features an aging core of veterans; however, Tremaine Edmunds could help transform their squad significantly in 2020. Furthermore, Jon-Eric Sullivan has recognized Coleman as an integral member of their organization; both parties hope that an agreement can be reached within weeks.
Rasul Douglas
Miami rookie Rasul Douglas stood out during a matchup between two of the premier cornerbacks in the NFL, Patrick Robinson and Jalen Mills of Pittsburgh and Ronald Brooks and Jaylen Watkins of Buffalo. Douglas recorded five tackles – three solo stops – as part of an effective defensive unit which limited them to just 92 total yards and one touchdown in the first half. Over training camp, Douglas competed with Patrick Robinson, Jalen Mills Ronald Brooks Jaylen Watkins Aaron Grymes for starting jobs under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
The Dolphins and Bills have enjoyed a longstanding rivalry. First meeting during Don Shula’s tenure as head coach with Hall-of-Famer quarterbacks Jim Kelly and Dan Marino leading both squads as premier franchises during the 1970s and 80s, both teams continued meeting annually since moving into AFC East after merger and relocation, initially at War Memorial Stadium (now Highmark Stadium) or Rich Stadium (now Highmark Stadium).
Both teams clinched playoff spots in their divisions, but the Dolphins earned the No. 1 seed due to their superior conference record. Meanwhile, Bills’ loss in their season finale marked an end of an 18-game home winning streak against divisional opponents at home.
Dolphins safety Ifeatu Melifonwu made an early interception of Allen’s end-zone pass that preserved their shutout and turned momentum back toward Miami. Their defense continued its strong play in the second half, limiting Buffalo’s offensive production while creating turnovers for Miami.
Bills made strides toward turning their deficit into a lead with 14 plays on their next drive, covering 68 yards in 14 plays on its subsequent possession. Unfortunately, Kiko Alonso of Dolphins caused Allen and Koonzle Alonso from Fighting Bull to engage in an altercation which resulted in both being ejected from the contest.
The Dolphins took back the lead in the fourth quarter following a 77-yard punt return by wide receiver Brian Hartline and kicker Dan Carpenter’s 30-yard field goal, but Buffalo responded with a 10-play, 71-yard drive that culminated with running back LeSean McCoy scoring on an 11-play drive for a touchdown run and field goal, narrowing their deficit to 27-24 and forcing overtime period; however, their late rally was enough to defeat them and claim victory over Buffalo.
Davonte Jordan
The Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins have long been fierce rivals. Since first meeting in the 1970s, these two teams have played in 28 regular season and playoff games between them – producing many iconic players like quarterback Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Thurman Thomas as well as legendary coaches like Don Shula, Bill Belichick and Marv Levy who have kept this rivalry competitive even after retirement of these legends.
The Dolphins defense was outstanding throughout, holding Buffalo to just one first down on their opening drive and forcing a three-and-out. On their next possession, Tua Tagovailoa connected with wide receiver Malik Washington for a touchdown that gave them an early 7-0 advantage. Bills eventually scored on their own but failed two-point conversion prevented them from closing within seven points of Miami.
Miami’s defensive unit continued their dominance in the second half with several takeaways. First, safety Ifeatu Melifonwu intercepted an Allen pass intended for tight end Dawson Knox; this turnover preserved their shutout and turned momentum back in their favor.
Next, their defense forced a fumble on the kickoff and Jack Jones recovered it at their 10-yard line. Following a short punt by Buffalo, they attempted an onside kick; however safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and cornerback Jack Jones managed to stop running back Khalil Shakir just short of reaching goal line.
In the fourth quarter, Brooks made one final stand when he stripped Allen on a scramble near midfield, giving them possession with 7:17 remaining and scoring on their next possession when Achane ran through Bills’ secondary for a 59-yard touchdown – lifting their record to 3-7 on the season.
Malik Washington
Malik Washington put together an outstanding day as a backup running back for Miami Dolphins despite only playing as an emergency replacement in their lineup. Washington recorded career high 225 yards rushing, scoring two touchdowns while also adding 51 receiving yards on six receptions – helping Miami to thwart Buffalo’s offense with his efforts.
Miami’s defense set the pace early, forcing a three-and-out on Buffalo’s first drive before disrupting their pocket for much of the rest of the first quarter. Bradley Chubb and Jordyn Brooks each registered quarterback hurries, while cornerback Jack Jones made an important third-down stop to prevent any large gains by their opponents.
Miami continued their dominant defensive performance in the second quarter, when Ifeatu Melifonwu made another key play by intercepting Allen’s end zone pass intended for Dawson Knox and saving their shutout and shifting momentum back toward their team.
Jake Bailey punted Buffalo deep at its own 3-yard line with 7:17 left in the half, prompting Dolphins’ defense to make another takeaway with Brooks stripping Allen on a scramble and Minkah Fitzpatrick recovering for a turnover on downs.
Buffalo’s offense struggled in the second half, leading to a fight erupting between Allen and Dolphins LB Kiko Alonso that was called by referee Jerome Boger. Miami held strong throughout, and Achane scored late 35-yard rushing touchdown to seal their win.
