Test matches are the purest form of cricket and require patience, strategy and nerves of steel. ODIs

Pakistan cricket team beat South Africa by 93 runs to end Proteas unbeaten streak in one-day internationals with an emphatic win at Faisalabad. Rain reduced the match to 47 overs per side, with Pakistan quickly racing past 378-5 in their second innings thanks to fifties from Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Agha and offspinner Sajid Khan en route.

Meanwhile South Africa, who needed 277 runs to win, struggled in the field and fell short by 16 runs. Tony de Zorzi fell to Shaheen Afridi lbw for 100, followed by captain Aiden Markram to leg before wicket for 49, leaving them in trouble.

Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis’ 73-run fifth wicket partnership briefly gave hope, until left-arm spinner Noman Ali generated reverse swing with the old ball to take three more wickets and finish up with 10-191.

Proteas batsman Anrich Nortje was sidelined for the remainder of the series after suffering a fractured toe during the second ODI, just days after being selected as part of South Africa’s squad for two more matches of this series.

The Proteas will travel to Abu Dhabi for their final tour game against Zimbabwe – an Ashes warm-up – on Sunday. They also plan on playing four ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals before returning home. South Africa have named an unchanged squad for Abu Dhabi;

Kwena Maphaka, Donovan Ferreira, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Sinethemba Qeshile will all make their ODI debuts; Rubin Hermann replaces Dewald Brevis due to injuries; South African-born Pakistani wicketkeeper batsman Dale Steyn will provide all-round support in Test series against Pakistan with all-rounders Dale Steyn and fast bowler Kyle Verreynne back in their ranks.

South African bowlers did an outstanding job limiting Pakistan to an underwhelming total. By consistently throwing hard lengths that yielded wickets, South Africa ultimately won this match thanks to Hendricks’ first T20I century and Hendricks’ performance as captain.

Babar Ayub performed well in his return game. He played some scintillating strokes and put together some worthwhile partnerships with Farhan and Salman Agha; even when wickets fell late they never looked at risk of not chasing down their target.
