Sri Lanka national cricket team is the national cricket team representing Sri Lanka and is a full member of the International Cricket Council with Test, One-Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) status. Based out of Colombo and overseen by Sri Lanka Cricket board.
Over the years, this team has produced many iconic players such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara.

Sri Lankan cricket team has long been one of the most dominant in world cricket. Winning an ODI World Cup just 14 years after receiving Test status was an eye opener to international cricket; furthermore, Sri Lanka has proven itself time after time as an Asian Test championship victor.
Gamini Dissanayake was an iconic leader of Sri Lanka’s national cricket team. He led an aggressive campaign for his country to earn Test status, building new stadiums to host international games and establishing training grounds for his players as well as procuring sponsorship from private firms – contributing substantially to its ultimate success in reaching its goals. His strong leadership was key in their accomplishments.
Sri Lankan national cricket team is well known for its talented and disciplined players. Distinguished by an excellent work ethic, their players are widely admired by other cricketing nations. Over the years they have produced great players like Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Aravinda De Silva among many others – and have won multiple ICC Champions Trophy titles as a result.
Sri Lanka made history when they took part in their inaugural One-Day International tournament (ODI) tournament in 1981, winning by 10 wickets against West Indies at Ahmedabad – marking the first time ever that an ODI team successfully chased down an total of 200 runs!
Michael Tissera’s brilliant captaincy played an instrumental part in this win – many would credit Michael Tissera’s batsmanship as the cause for success! This victory marked one of several milestones achieved since that tournament’s debut.
Sri Lanka made an impactful statement at the 1999 ICC World Cup under captain Mahela Jayawardene’s captaincy, winning under record time under captaincy of Mahela Jayawardene.
They came back from losing in both semi-final matches against Australia and South Africa before facing India in the final and taking an unprecedented 10-wicket win despite Dilshan and Tharanga both scoring centuries for Sri Lanka to make history-making runs against them at 178/6 before going on to claim victory.
Sri Lankan players
Sri Lanka boasts an illustrious roster of legendary cricketers across all formats. One of their greatest achievements in recent history was their 1996 ODI World Cup triumph – not only did it gain global exposure for their team, but it changed how limited-overs cricket is played worldwide due to Sri Lanka’s aggressive batting style which helped professionalise cricket in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka witnessed an exceptional surge in its player pool during the 2000s. Current Sri Lankan squad includes 23 players. Most are contracted centrally through Sri Lanka Cricket while franchises contract some.
Domestic competitions include First-class Premier Trophy, List A Premier Limited over Tournament, and Twenty20 Tournament; top four teams from these tournaments qualify for National Championship competition.

Former international cricketer and current chairman of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Additionally he serves on the International Cricket Council ruling panel and has played over 100 Test matches for Sri Lanka – making him one of its most revered figures within cricket.

The team name derives from Tamil word “sri,” meaning “lion.” Their cricket team logo depicts this animal with a sword in hand – as featured on their national flag – on top of a bright blue background which represents their jersey color; furthermore, there is a crest prominently displayed at the top right corner of this jersey.
Sri Lanka is home to multiple sports, but the nation’s favourite pastime is cricket. Their national team currently leads the world in Twenty20 cricket and won once at the Cricket World Cup; additionally they’ve achieved great success playing Test matches over West Indies and Australia teams.

This victory heralded professionalisation of cricket in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan squad is currently in preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup to be hosted in Colombo and drawn into Group B alongside Ireland, Oman and Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka currently field 31 players for its national squad, including 14 capped and five uncapped players who are all centrally contracted with SLC.
Prior to recently, there was an abundance of uncapped players; these have now been reduced to include only Niroshan Dickwella, Lasith Embuldeniya, and Praveen Jayawickrama as uncapped players.
