QB Josh Allen
The Miami Dolphins defeated the Buffalo Bills 30-13 Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium, ending a seven-game losing streak and improving to 3-7 on the year. Running back De’Von Achane scored two touchdowns while also adding 35-yard reception, leading them offensively.
Their defense recorded three takeaways which enabled the Dolphins to secure one of their most dominant performances of 2018.
The Dolphins opened up quickly against Buffalo Bills, forcing a three-and-out on their opening drive and then leading a 12-play, 92-yard scoring drive that resulted in Tua Tagovailoa throwing for 9-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s 12-play scoring drive, helped by great blocking from Kenny Stills and Jordan Phillips strong tackle.
On Buffalo’s next possession, Allen made history by throwing his inaugural career interception; Riley Patterson scored a 41-yard field goal shortly thereafter. Buffalo’s offense struggled throughout the first half and several drives ended with a fumble by James Cook or other Bills players, further demoralizing their chances.
After an uneventful third quarter, Buffalo finally found their groove in the fourth. Quarterback Josh Allen connected with wide receiver Keon Coleman on a 35-yard touchdown, but their two-point conversion attempt failed. Unfortunately for Buffalo though, Dolphins defense held firm and allowed Buffalo’s offense to run out the clock, ultimately giving Miami victory.
Josh Allen, quarterback for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL), was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft and considered an attractive high-upside prospect due to his unique combination of size, arm strength, speed, and running ability – characteristics often associated with John Elway, Randall Cunningham or Brett Favre as examples of quarterback talent.
RB James Cook
After two consecutive losses on Wild Card weekend, the Buffalo Bills managed to regroup under head coach Sean McDermott and achieve success under their new leader. Their defense led the charge while running back De’Von Achane provided much-needed offense spark.
Cook’s first run of the game set the tone for his impressive performance throughout. The rookie executed two hard cuts to get into open field before sprinting through a hole for a 24-yard run to the goal line. On his next play, he took a handoff before quickly accelerating past defensive players for another touchdown score.
In the opening quarter, Buffalo’s defense struggled to contain Miami’s potency offensively. Jordyn Brooks and Bradley Chubb interfered with their quarterback throughout the drive, and cornerback Jack Jones intervened on fourth down when Buffalo attempted a touchdown attempt.
In the second quarter, Miami took control as Tagovailoa connected for two touchdown passes to Malik Washington and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle – one was scored from 9 yards out and one from 38. Additionally, Maxwell Hairston forced and Minkah Fitzpatrick recovered a fumble that allowed Miami to take an early 21-0 advantage into halftime.
The Bills started to rally on their final drive of the half, but it wasn’t enough as their drive stalled in the red zone again and Cook’s fumble was punched out by Jones and recovered by JuJu Brents – major factors as the Bills were never able to gain the upper hand in the second half.
WR Keon Coleman
Miami responded swiftly after Buffalo’s initial drive, taking advantage of their quick three-and-out to mount an effective 9-play, 92-yard scoring drive led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and culminating with wide receiver Malik Washington receiving a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Riley Patterson kicking 46-yard field goal to make it 16-0 just before halftime – Buffalo would never score again in this game despite making four first half possessions and scoring only once (for halftime purposes). This first half deficit would become even larger than usual as only Buffalo scored once from Buffalo during any previous first half encounter this year;
The Dolphins took control in the second half, holding Buffalo Bills to just one first down and one score. Running back De’Von Achane scored on a 59-yard touchdown run with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter to put Miami up 23-6.
Allen connected with Coleman for 35-yard touchdown pass in fourth quarter; two-point conversion attempt failed after safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and cornerback Xavier Jones stopped wideout Khalil Shakir before reaching goal line.
Second-round selection in 2024, Coleman has seen over 40% of Buffalo Bills offensive snaps through two games and just a handful of targets so far. Still learning on his feet, this promising young playmaker should only gain more playing time as time progresses.
WR Khalil Shakir
Shakir has shown remarkable strength since suffering a high ankle sprain at Buffalo Bills’ preseason training camp, making a quick recovery and playing over half of Buffalo’s offensive snaps on Sunday as well as recording five catches for 245 yards across three games this season.
The Bills’ top receiving threat has an exceptional knack for outwitting defenses, scoring five straight touchdowns this year and setting a career-best 14.3 yards-per-catch average. A 2024 second-round pick, this 2024 second-rounder ranks fifth in catch percentage (76%).
Shakir was Buffalo’s standout receiver in the opening frame, but his efforts were limited by Miami’s dominant defense. Bradley Chubb and Jordyn Brooks disrupted quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s initial drive by disrupting his pocket; cornerback Jack Jones then stopped it on third down.
Buffalo’s defense kept up pressure against Miami through most of the second quarter. Buffalo safety Maxwell Hairston returned a fumble by forcing a stripped Allen play on fourth-and-10, leading to a field goal for Miami early on and giving their side an early edge in control of proceedings.
At 6:31 of the third quarter, Allen connected with Keon Coleman on a 35-yard touchdown pass for Buffalo to finally score and reduce its deficit to 14-13. However, two-point conversion failed and thus they fell back further behind.
Miami’s defense continued to exert control for much of the remainder of the game. Brooks and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick both recorded a sack, while linebacker Zach Sieler collected four quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. On special teams, defensive tackle Willie Gay Jr. returned three punts for 68 yards total and scored on one return – all feats accomplished without incident from any Miami player.
TE Trey Burton
The Dolphins completely controlled the first half, outgaining Buffalo 221 to 90 and holding an incredible 14 first downs to four for Buffalo. Following an extended drive by Tua Tagovailoa and Malik Washington to give his team an early 7-0 advantage early in the second quarter.
Soon thereafter, Miami’s defense made their second takeaway of the game when Bradley Chubb stripped Allen while scrambling, with safety Minkah Fitzpatrick recovering it at their 3-yard line. Miami continued their great defensive work by blocking off Bills’ final drive of first half play.
Miami immediately capitalized on an error by Buffalo’s special teams unit as soon as the third quarter began. Special teams coordinator Brian Flores called a fake punt on fourth down, but punter Jake Bailey’s snap was too high and forced him to kick into the end zone where cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu recovered it for a safety.
In the second half, Miami took control of the game as running back De’Von Achane ran for a 59-yard touchdown with just 13 minutes remaining to increase their lead to 33-6. Buffalo made one final attempt at two-point conversion with Allen throwing to Coleman but this attempt failed as Jones and Minkah Fitzpatrick stopped it just short of goal line.
The Dolphins emerged triumphant, winning their fourth game and returning to playoff contention. Meanwhile, Bills remain disorganized on both sides of the ball; to regain any significance for themselves.
