The current state of the team
Sri Lanka Cricket, established in 1879, is one of the most celebrated national cricket teams worldwide. Over its history it has produced some great cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.

The cricket club provides its players with numerous facilities that help train them, such as an advanced training ground and indoor cricket facility, with coaches and support staff on hand to prepare them for domestic and international games.
Furthermore, its sponsorship of local clubs provides extensive youth development programs. In fact, its academy produces some of the top talent such as Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim while simultaneously spreading cricket throughout India by making it accessible across socioeconomic classes.
The history of the team
Sri Lanka national cricket team is a professional team based out of Sri Lanka and known for their strong batting and bowling lineups, the team has established itself both Test and One Day International cricket – including winning both tournaments (ODI World Cup 1996, T20 World Cup 2014).
Dasun Shanaka currently leads limited-overs cricket while Dimuth Karunaratne oversees Test cricket duties.
Sri Lanka was formed as the Ceylonese Cricket Association in 1922 and gained full membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1988 under Arjuna Ranatunga’s legendary captaincy.
A year later, however, Sri Lanka made headlines when they stunned India at Old Trafford in England during the ICC Trophy final with an extraordinary win that marked an Associate Member beating out one of their full members – something no other Associate Member had done previously and went a long way toward solidifying Sri Lanka as an international force.

Muralitharan holds several accolades in both ODI and Test cricket: most wickets in both, joint most wicket-taker in both Champions Trophy and ICC World Twenty20; most successful fielder. In addition, he boasts an outstanding batting and bowling record across both formats of cricket.
Sri Lankan cricketers have enjoyed recent success internationally, with players like Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan making names for themselves on the global scene. Unfortunately, however, their national team has struggled to reach major ICC tournaments since 2015 by reaching the semi-finals at least.
Sri Lanka boasts an extensive cultural tradition of folk dancing and music. Popular musical genres include jntaka, kandyan and kalabha; these styles were once used to protest political injustice but are now part of Sri Lankan cultural heritage.

The matches between the two teams
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have met multiple times over time in various tournaments and matches. For instance, both teams met twice at the ICC Twenty20 World Cup between 2024-2025; both times Sri Lanka won their match while Bangladesh edged ahead. Both nations also faced each other during Test matches and one-day internationals.
The opening match of this series saw several contentious incidents. First, Sri Lanka refused to shake hands with Bangladesh batters following the game as an act of anger on their side; no explanation or apology were offered from their team, prompting an international outrage in cricketing circles.
This was Bangladesh’s inaugural match since their dispute with the International Cricket Council (ICC) emerged. This stemmed from their Cricket Board (BCB) asking to relocate games at the 2024 T20 World Cup due to security concerns for their players, yet when that request was declined by ICC they removed Bangladesh from participating.
Though surrounded by controversy, both teams played some fantastic cricket in this match. Both scored over 200 runs; Asalanka scored an outstanding innings by making 106 off 123 balls for top run scorer, while his fellow Bangladesh player Najmul Hossain Shanto joined him at second wicket with 71 runs scored from 51 balls.
Bangladesh’s batting collapsed after their opening pair fell quickly in succession, with just 15 deliveries required for all three top order batsmen to depart – Kamindu caught Tanzim Hasan at short midwicket and Taskin Ahmed caught at deep square leg, respectively; but Musfiqur Rahim scored unbeaten 51 with six fours and two pulled sixes, helping Bangladesh post an respectable total of 207 runs.
Mathews was dismissed timed out, creating an uproar with spectators and creating much confusion among players alike. Although Mathews claimed to have reached his crease within two minutes, umpires disagreed and declared him out; players left without shaking hands as is customary after cricket matches.
