Bangladesh vs Afghanistan
Bangladesh and Afghanistan will face off in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday for the final ODI of their white-ball series, looking to avoid an embarrassing whitewash. After their success at Asia Cup 2018, Afghanistan have decided to host Bangladesh for this bilateral series and both teams hope to avoid a clean sweep in this game.
Bangladesh are looking to stage a comeback after losing both games of this series, hoping their batsmen perform better to even up the series and give themselves a shot at victory in game three. Afghanistan however are hoping to complete a whitewash over their hosts by winning this third one too.
Saif Hassan and Mohammad Nabi should feel confident of success when playing in this long format tournament, having already excelled in T20I series. Both men will aim to replicate their T20I form over longer formats.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) oversees their national cricket team, known as “Tigers” due to the country’s famous Bengal Tiger. Competing across all forms of international cricket – Test matches, ODIs and T20Is since 1986!
Bangladesh managed a decent start, as their batsmen managed to hold together against an effective bowling attack. Unfortunately, their lower order couldn’t hold together; several wickets fell quickly to leave Bangladesh bowled out at 190.
Afghanistan began their reply well, getting to 151 before quickly falling apart to just 109 for 3 in response to Rashid Khan’s five-wicket haul and wrist spin from Rashid Khan. Their batsmen found no relief against Rashid’s wrist spin; Ibrahim Zadran was one of few players able to deal with it before succumbing to injury and being dismissed early; later Nangeyalia Kharote also fell foul of Rashid’s fine spinnerry as she was caught long on for 14.
Match Prediction
On Monday (November 17), Bangladesh A will face Afghanistan A at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium in Doha to open their Asia Cup Rising Stars campaigns.
Both sides come into this match off successive victories in previous tournament outings: Bangladesh A defeated Hong Kong thanks to Habibur Rahman Sohan’s unbeaten 35-ball 100; while Afghanistan A outwitted Pakistan with an exciting three-wicket win that offered something for all audiences.
Bangladesh’s top order is spearheaded by experienced players such as Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, who have led their side to steady advancement through both Test rankings and one-day and Twenty20 International tournaments. Under coach Dav Whatmore they have thrived through 2010s with an optimal blend of experience and youth yielding positive results for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh currently ranks ninth globally for both Tests and ODIs, and eighth worldwide in T20Is. They compete in three nationwide domestic competitions – Bangladesh Premier League being their flagship competition that draws talent from around the globe; two first-class championships featuring teams representing their administrative divisions; as well as several domestic tournaments that bring local talent from every administrative district of their nation to play against one another.
Cricket has been played throughout Bengal for centuries, but proper tournaments were first hosted during the 1950s when modern-day Bangladesh was still known as East Pakistan. Bangladesh earned full International Cricket Council (ICC) membership in 2000 and hosted their inaugural Test match the following year – their national team is known as ‘Tigers’ and they are administered by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
The BCB recently made significant investments in their cricket infrastructure, such as new stadiums and training facilities, but financial constraints in Bangladesh have negatively impacted participation levels across domestic and international cricket in recent years.
Although numbers have decreased drastically since 2015, we expect the Tigers to rebound quickly and compete at higher levels once again within a matter of years – this country holds great promise as an effective force within short format cricket!
Match Result
Bangladesh will play their final group match against Afghanistan to decide their destiny in the tournament, and a win would give them a strong chance of reaching round two, while defeat would mean elimination from contention altogether.
Afghan bowlers delivered a strong performance and prevented Bangladesh batsmen from scoring any substantial runs, and also managed to pick up several wickets – however sloppy fielding cost them in the end; Bangladesh openers Emon and Tanzim put up an excellent total but couldn’t stay ahead of their target.
Rahmat Shah made history during this match by becoming the first Afghan cricketer ever to score 4000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs).
In doing so, he eclipsed legendary spinners Kumble and Warne. Additionally, he entered into the top ten all-time wicket takers in white ball cricket – although unfortunately due to calf injury Rahmat will miss his third and final ODI against Bangladesh; Mohammad Shah will take his place.
