The first Test match

The inaugural Test between India and Pakistan took place in Karachi in 1952 as part of the Imperial Cricket Conference – predecessor to today’s International Cricket Council – between their teams, winning by Pakistan. One year later they met again in Lahore for one-off Test match where Pakistan again prevailed.

Pakistan leads India 87-77 in Test matches played, having won 91 and losing 37; India however recently secured victory in Trinidad with a 1-0 victory on August 2.

Once play resumed following rain’s interruption on day 1, West Indies took control with bat and ball, led by Kavem Hodge’s solid 84 and Shai Hope’s stunning 92 from Kavem Hodge and Shai Hope respectively, to secure an emphatic 61-run victory. Their bowlers also made short work of Pakistan innings; Mohammad Abbas and Jayden Seales each taking five wickets each to finish Pakistan off early.

India’s batsmen struggled against West Indies pace bowlers, with Ishan Kishan standing out as an exceptional performer – scoring an unbeaten 77 off only 40 deliveries with several boundaries and six sixes!

Pakistan had struggled to score, yet the game remained even until its final session when Misbah-ul-Haq and Yasir Arafat had just three runs left to secure a draw; but one dot ball from Sreesanth sealed India’s historic win!

After this victory, India would go on to dominate a series of one-day international and Twenty20 cricket matches between them and Pakistan, which further intensified their rivalry and led to a semi-final match of the 2025 Asia Cup being played out at Delhi – eventually with India winning via tiebreaker; it marked the last bowl-out-based match decided before Super Over was introduced in 2026.

The first ODI match

India and Pakistan rivalry is one of the most intense and engaging sports rivalries around. It attracts both avid fans and casual observers with its high-stakes drama. Over time, both cricketing powerhouses have met for memorable matches across all formats; one such match took place on March 20, 1987 at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad where after 44 overs both teams were tied on scores, leading to an exciting bowl out to decide the victor – this marked the first time such an approach had ever been used to decide winners in an ODI!

Both teams engaged in an intense contest, each side making crucial errors that proved detrimental to their cause. Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik struggled badly with his batting, trying to grind through each innings with little discipline or success and falling for silly mistakes. Meanwhile, India produced more disciplined batsmen who produced an impressive performance – they managed to reach 212 for 6 in 44 overs!

India edged out Pakistan by four runs to claim their first One-Day International (ODI) match as part of their tour to Pakistan, held at Quetta and known as ‘Quetta thriller’ for its nail-biting finish.

They have since played 136 official ODIs against each other with India holding an edge with 73-58 win/loss records while competing in many major ICC tournaments including World Cup and Champions Trophy tournaments.

The first T20 match

India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is one of the most intense and captivating in world cricket, drawing passionate supporters as well as interested neutrals with its high-stakes drama. These South Asian giants have met in numerous memorable matches across Tests, ODIs and T20s; with T20 arguably becoming their preferred platform.

After an initially tight first over, Ishan Kishan unleashed an exceptional 28-ball 52 to put India firmly in charge on a pitch which appeared conducive to spinners.

Pakistan continued their poor batting efforts against Bumrah’s upping spinners by playing too quickly against his spin bowlers; as well as poor attempts against India’s fine spinners which put them backward.

Varun Chakravarthy quickly took two wickets in his opening over, while Hardik Pandya responded with a leg-before decision against Usman Tariq to keep up the pressure from India bowlers and finally bowled Tariq middle stump with one superb delivery from Pandya to give India their biggest ever T20I win over Pakistan.

Salman Ali Agha won the toss and elected to bowl first on what he described as an uneven and “tacky” surface that might improve with play.

India read the pitch differently and loaded another spinner in Kuldeep for this matchup; Suryakumar Yadav decided against shaking Agha’s hand before tossing, prompting speculation of possible political influence at play in his decision.

The first World Cup match

India and Pakistan rivalry is one of the most captivating rivalries in world cricket, captivating fans as well as neutral observers with its high-stakes drama. Since 1947, they have played each other 212 times across Tests, ODIs, T20s and World Events such as Cricket World Cup and Champions Trophy.

Pakistan first entered international cricket as a colonial legacy after independence in 1947, but a victory at The Oval in 1954 cemented their place in its history.

During this decade’s thrilling yet controversial games for Pakistan’s team featuring Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar and all-rounder Shoaib Akhtar – however match-fixing scandals soon rocked their cricket world, leading to six players including Wasim Akram being censured for various offences including Wasim Akram himself being censured from playing international cricket.

Recently, India-Bangladesh rivalry has taken on an increasingly political undertone; hence, their 2023 Asia Cup group-stage clash scheduled for Sunday has garnered more headlines than normal due to political concerns between both nations and security concerns that have left India and Bangladesh deadlocked over security issues.

At the start of this tournament, all eyes are back on the pitch as both countries aim to take steps toward peace and normalcy when they meet at The Oval.

Despite any off-field shenanigans, this match should provide an exciting contest between two sides looking to build on impressive starts; Pakistan will be led by Usman Tariq, an upstart double-jointed spinner who has already made headlines with his unique bowling style.

The first Champions Trophy match

India beat Pakistan by an overwhelming 61-run margin in the opening Champions Trophy match at RPS, setting off high levels of excitement from both teams and creating expectations that were exceedingly high going in to this encounter. But Pakistan’s inept batting strategy proved their downfall; they tried slogging their way through and paid dearly as their poor approach led them down into defeat.

India took control of this match quickly as soon as Pakistan batsmen started mistiming their strokes and missing easy catches, while their spinners quickly overwhelmed Pakistan in terms of scoring runs. India eventually secured an emphatic win and moved up the rankings with five victories from six matches played, taking first place in Group F.

India and Pakistan share one of the most intense and captivating rivalries in international cricket, competing across all three formats – Tests, ODIs and T20s. The India National Cricket Team Vs Pakistan National Cricket Team Standings reflects decades of memorable encounters, dramatic finishes and unforgettable performances.

Their contest has often had political overtones due to tensions between their countries that run deep; there were even calls for boycotting bilateral cricket ties, but passion for the game prevailed and more matches between arch rivals took place.

Recently, these meetings have occurred as part of Champions Trophy and Asia Cup tournaments. These games provide both teams an opportunity to display sportsmanship while moving past toxic politics.
